The Engineering Machine

Our Subteams

Building a racecar is a multidisciplinary effort. Our team is divided into several specialized departments, each tackling different problems to create a winning vehicles and a successful team.

Aerodynamics

Aero

The Aerodynamics subteam is responsible for the aerodynamic design of the car, which includes the front and rear wings, sidepods, and undertray. Their work ensures the car stays glued to the track during high-speed cornering in the autox and endurance events.

Using extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and real-world testing using electronic pitot tube sensors, this team designs the front and rear wings, sidepods, and undertray. Their work ensures the car stays glued to the track during high-speed cornering in the autox and endurance events.

Autonomous System

AS

The driverless subteam develops our custom autonomous stack. Using custom built tools and a simulation environment, the team is able to develop and test their algorithms in a safe and controlled environment and get every bit of performance the car can give them.

They integrate LiDAR, IMU and ground speed sensor and run their algorithms on high-performance compute units to drive the car at the limit without human control.

Electric Powertrain

EAS

The Electric Powertrain subteam is responsible for the design and manufacturing of the electric motors, a completely custom inverter and our HV battery. Through the selection of cells, electric motor and inverter design as well as packaging design decisions, the subteam is continually working to squeeze every last bit of performance out of our powertrain.

Thermal management, power efficiency and inverter control are only a few of the many complex design challenges the subteam is working on and continually simulating using a custom toolchain.

Electronics

EL

With a completely bespoke hardware, the electronics subteam is responsible for the design and manufacturing of all LV components, such as sensor board and vehicle control units.

They are also responsible for the integration of all sensors and actuators in the vehicle and the communication via various bus systems in the car. All software that currently runs in the car is completely custom and the result of a multi-year development process.

Marketing and Management

M&M

The Marketing and Management subteam is responsible for the overall outside communication of the team as well as managing all events and merchandise.

They are also responsible for the team's static events, such as the business plan presentation and the cost and manufacturing analysis.

Monocoque

Mono

Every year, the monocoque subteam designs and manufactores a completely custom carbon fiber monocoque chassis. The chassis is the structural backbone of the car and is designed to withstand the immense forces experienced during dynamic events. By using FEA simulations and layup testing, the team ensures that the monocoque meets the strict safety requirements of the competition while keeping the weight as low as possible.

Additionally, the monocoque subteam is responsible for the design and manufacturing of the ergonomic parts, such as the seat and the steering wheel.

Vehicle Dynamics

VD & VDC

The Vehicle Dynamics Team is responsible for kinematics development, tire selection and the overall vehicle performance. Using self-developed tooling, the vehicle dynamics engineers continually work to improve the cars performance. They validate this through extensive testing on track and in the lab.

Additionally, they develop our simulink based vehicle dynamics control responsible for live dynamics control, such as torque vectoring and active yaw control.

Hydrogen Powertrain

Combustion Powertrain

The Hydrogen Powertrain is responsible for the development of the hydrogen powered racecar. This includes the design and maintenance of the combustion motor itself as well as the complex tank structure where the hydrogen is stored.

Additionally, the team maintains a custom built testbench used to tune the combustion motor and evaluate motor control unit parameters.
