After you apply, we will invite you to a personal interview to get to know you better. In July, there will be a meet-and-greet weekend, so it's great if you apply in time so we can plan with you. The specific sub-team assignments will likely take place in August. Of course, we will consider personal preferences and strive to find the best solution for everyone.
Yes, that is definitely possible! However, depending on how late you apply, your preferred sub-team might already be full. In general, applying before the deadline makes planning easier for us, but we do not reject motivated applicants just because they applied a little later.
KA-RaceIng is a full-time project. The time commitment naturally varies depending on the season, the vehicle goals, and the different tasks and components involved. In principle, we do not rule out a part-time model. Whether participation with significantly limited availability makes sense is something we are happy to discuss on a case-by-case basis, as we strive to make participation possible for as many people as possible.
Some of us have a student job alongside their participation. With good organization and prior communication with your sub-team leader, this is also possible.
The season begins in September with a concept and design phase. At the start of the year, we move into the manufacturing phase to complete our vehicles and present them to the public for the first time at the rollout in early May. After that, we commission the vehicles and prepare for the competitions. The season concludes in the summer with several international events.
You don’t need any specific prior knowledge to get started with us, though it can be beneficial depending on the component or task. We make sure to find a suitable role for every motivated team member.
Since KA-RaceIng is a full-time project, you likely won’t have as much time for your studies as you did before. A normal semester with attending lectures, doing internships, and writing exams becomes more challenging alongside our project. Most of us still manage to write a few exams per semester. It’s important to manage your time well and communicate this effectively.
We recommend applying only after completing the first few semesters and finishing all introductory exams.
Our office (the so-called "MAB"), the workshop, and the test site are located at KIT Campus East. We spend most of our time working there.
We don’t force anyone to be present, but especially at the beginning, it’s very beneficial to work at the MAB (that’s our office) to exchange ideas and ask questions. Once we move into the manufacturing and testing phases, being there is essential, as the car can't be built and tested from home. A lot of team dynamics also develop during the time spent working together, as well as during shared table football, coffee, and lunch breaks.
Since we have many international members, meetings are usually held in English to ensure everyone understands the discussion. Therefore, good English skills are useful but not a barrier. A lot of communication also happens in German.
Here you can find more information about our sub-teams and components.
If you want, I can help you with more specific details or guide you through them!
Since we are a student group and a non-profit organization, the involvement is entirely voluntary and cannot be paid. In return, our members have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge, apply the theory from their studies, build connections with sponsors, and experience teamwork on a whole new level. Quote from a team member: "KA-RaceIng is not an addition to your studies, but your studies are an addition to KA-RaceIng."
Participation in the club is free of charge. However, food, drinks, team wear, and team-building activities cannot be covered by the club due to our organizational structure.
Before the season begins, we try to assign all members to the sub-teams based on their preferences and the planned workload. At the start of the new season, the first few days are used to give everyone an overview of the different components within the sub-teams, through presentations, independent research in our internal wiki, and discussions with predecessors/alumni. After everyone has had time to think about it and discuss their thoughts with the sub-team leaders, we aim to assign the components in a satisfactory way. If you already have a specific component in mind or an idea for development, you can mention this directly in your application so we know right away.
The car is driven by team members. The drivers are part of a sub-team and also have their own components, so there is no one who only joins the club as a driver. Throughout the season, there will be a selection process, together with the drivers from the previous season, to find new or additional drivers.
In general, we all spend an entire season (two semesters) in the team to build and test the vehicle after the concept and design phase. The summer events then mark the conclusion of the season. Therefore, it doesn’t make much sense to participate for only half a season, as you would either miss the entire design and manufacturing phase or only work on development without attending the events.
