Hydrogen Engine Project

Our Formula Student team is starting a new, pioneering project: the development of a hydrogen engine. After we used the last classic combustion engine in 2019 and switched to a pure BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), we now want to explore new avenues with this pilot project. Back in 2010, we were the first Formula Student team to ever implement direct gasoline injection - now we have set ourselves the goal of being the first team to implement a roadworthy racing car with a hydrogen engine.

As part of the project, an old vehicle will be converted to run on hydrogen. Our goal is to gain valuable experience so that we can compete in future with a completely new, hydrogen-powered racing car. This project forms the basis for our upcoming seasons and drives our innovative strength - be it in the passenger car and commercial vehicle sector or in the world of heat engines.

What is the Hydrogen Project Team responsible for?

  • Conversion of an old vehicle with a combustion engine to hydrogen operation.

  • Modification and optimization of the engine on our own test bench.

  • Repair of the vehicle and preparation for international competitions.

  • Basis for future seasons in which a completely new racing car is to be developed.

  • Building your own network of industrial partners.

What does working in the hydrogen team offer you?

  • The unique opportunity to shape the development process of a vehicle right from the start.

  • To be one of the first Formula Student teams to realize a hydrogen engine.

  • Development work on an innovative topic.

  • The collaboration of different disciplines and study programs.

  • Working in a small team with a lot of responsibility and short decision-making processes.

  • In-depth knowledge of how a hydrogen engine works.

  • Many contacts in the industry.

What can a member of the hydrogen team expect at the events?

  • The events are the highlight at the end of each season. We present our vehicle and compete in various disciplines.

  • Each team member is responsible for his or her component in the dynamic disciplines and ensures that the racing car is ready to drive and performs well.

  • The static disciplines, engineering design, cost report and business plan, require a high level of technical understanding and knowledge of the car down to the smallest detail. More information at Formula Student.

  • Interaction with your own team, lively exchange with other teams as well as partners and sponsors.

  • And of course, have lots of fun!

What are the tasks of the hydrogen project team?

  • As part of our pilot project, work on the test bench plays a particularly important role. At the same time, it must be ensured that the old vehicle is ready to drive and is converted to run on hydrogen, for example a new wiring harness is required. The following tasks are planned:

    • Engine and test bench

    • electronics

    • chassis

    • drive train

    • CAD

    • business plan & cost report

    • marketing

    • safety regulations
